Trojans race to top of NJCAA rankings

(ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.) – Two members of the Trojan track and field team headed to Albuquerque, New Mexico to compete in the 2017 Cherry and Silver Invitational hosted by the University of New Mexico. The Trojan runners, Elias Gedyon and Daniel Haymes, each competed in the mile, with Gedyon also competing in the 800m. Both Trojans ran extremely well against top completion from four-year schools bringing home great qualifying times.

Gedyon ran the fast heat of the mile with a number of Kenyon runners from the University of Texas El Paso and a strong group from Adams State University. He placed fourth in the heat with a time of 4:16;61. Haymes ran the slower heat and decimated the field finishing at 4:22.75, nearly three seconds ahead of second place. He was ninth overall. The two are now ranked first and second in the NJCAA standings. In the 800m Gedyon ran a 1:53.69 to place sixth overall with runners from UNM, ASU and West Texas A&M. He is currently ranked first in the nation in the 800m as well. Gedyon was named NJCAA Indoor Track and Field National Athlete of the Week following his excellent showing in Albuquerque.

"I'm very proud of how Dan and Elias competed this weekend," commented Coach Lauren Martin. "They went up against some very good competition and really asserted themselves. Dan ran a great race to win his heat with a superb last quarter mile. Elias really battled all the way to the line in the 800, which is all I want to see this time of year. Both of these guys are exactly where they need to be in their training and racing for this time of the year."

Next weekend the Trojan track team will compete at Adams State in Alamosa at the Grizzly/Buffalo/Trojan Clash. The TSJC team will feature many new members racing for the first time as well as the return of Maria Montes who is currently fourth in the nation in the 5000m after an early meet in December. Races will continue throughout February with the National meet taking place in Kansas in early March.
