Cross Country teams wrap up the season at Nationals

(EL DORADO, Kan.) – An exciting and successful first year of Cross County came to an end at the 2016 National Championship meet in El Dorado, Kansas this past Saturday as the Trojans competed with NJCAA teams from across the nation. TSJC's ten runners joined over 600 others, representing over 40 colleges, to take the track at the Prairie Trail Golf Course.

The Lady Trojans competed first, running the 5K with 316 individuals representing 37 teams. Lancing Community College scored 103 points, edging out Central Arizona and El Paso Community College by three points to claim the team title. TSJC placed 27th overall with a team total of 728. Leanne Pompeani from Iowa Central Community College won the overall title with a time of 17:11.34. Winona Martin was the first Trojan across the line in 134th place with a time of 20:46.33. Maria Montes was 155th, Wyonna Martin was 157th, Margarita Jones was 224th and Brianna Molina was 233rd.

"There is no recreating a national meet during the regular season," commented Coach Lauren Martin. "It was a great learning experience for the ladies. They all got out there and competed, which will serve them well in the long run picture. I am proud of how well these ladies ran throughout the whole year,"

In the Men's 8K it was Central Arizona claiming the team title over the other 39 squads with a total of 42 points. TSJC was 20th overall with 540. Individually Trojans Elias Gedyon and Daniel Haymes wrapped up a great season with another strong performance, both finishing in the top 25 in the nation and earning All-American awards. Gedyon was 11th overall with a time of 25:25.95. Haymes finished 23rd crossing the line at 25:52.69. Nicolas Molina was 133rd, Cody Latone was 204th and Manuel Villegas finished 224th. Central Arizona's Gilbert Kigen won the individual title completing the race in 23:47.45.

"I was so proud of the young men on Saturday," said Martin. "Each kid faced a little bit of adversity and stuck with it till the end. Elias has been a great team leader. He got a really bad stitch during the race and kept running through a lot of pain. You could tell he wanted to keep running hard for the four other boys in the race. Dan also had a great race. I have no doubt that now with some national experience that he will only get better and better. I look forward to seeing what the boys will do next year."

The Trojans had an amazing first season of Cross Country, placing in the region and competing strong at the national level. With such a young squad there is no doubt they will be even better next season. The Trojans don't have much time before they need to lace up their running shoes again, as they will move into the Indoor Track and Field season in less than a month. They will also compete throughout the spring in the outdoor Track and Field season as well.
